While permanent residency suggests that a holder of an Australian Permanent Resident visa can remain in Australia indefinitely, all Permanent Resident visas forAustralia have a travel facility period.
Once that travel facility period lapses a Permanent Resident visa holder may remain indefinitely in Australia, however should they wish to travel outside Australia for any period of time they need to ensure that they have the right of re-entry.
To retain Permanent Residency in Australia after a permanent residence validity period has lapsed, a Permanent Resident must lodge and be granted a ResidentReturn Return Visa prior to any departure from Australia, or if resident overseas lodgement prior to the lapse of their Permanent Resident visa.
