Prospective Marriage
Are you engaged to marry an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or an Eligible New Zealand citizen? A Prospective Marriage visa for Australia could be your visa pathway to Australia.
The Prospective Marriage visa for Australia is sometimes referred to more broadly as a fiancé visa.
The visa allows you to:
- travel to, enter and remain in Australia for 9 months
- work in Australia
- access public health care in Australia
- include in your application dependent children
- apply for a Partner visa once you have entered in a legal marriage with the sponsor
To be eligible for this visa you to demonstrate that:
- you are engaged to be married to the Australian citizen, Permanent Resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen (sponsor)
- you and the sponsor are both over 18 years old at the time of application
- you and the sponsor have met in person since both parties have turned 18 years old
- you and the sponsor have both consented to the marriage
- you and the sponsor are both free to marry
- you and the sponsor intend to legally enter into a valid marriage within the 9 months from the date the visa is granted
Similar to a Partner visa, a Prospective Marriage visa requires substantial evidence to support the application.
There are a number of factors that a Department of Home Affairs Case Officer takes into consideration when deciding a Prospective Marriage visa application:
- Length and status of the relationship
- Financial aspects of the relationship*
- Household arrangements*
- Social aspects of the relationship*
- Commitment

Applications for this visa must be lodged while the applicant is outside of Australia.
Once the marriage between you and the sponsor has occurred you can then lodge a Partner Visa application.
