Australia’s General Skilled Migration program is aimed at attracting highly skilled professionals, senior managers and tradespeople. Skilled migration is a major contributor to the Department of Home Affairs' annual visa program.
Skilled migration is processed in stages:
- Skills Assessment
- English language testing*
- Expression of Interest (EOI)
- State or Territory Nomination / Family sponsorship**
- Visa application***
* may be required before the Skills Assessment in some cases
** for Subclass 190 and 491 visas
*** requires a visa invitation before you can apply
Skilled Independent – Subclass 189
- Permanent Resident visa
- allows you to travel to and stay in Australia indefinitely with a 5 year travel facility from the date the visa is granted
- requires at least 65 overall skilled points
- does not require sponsorship by a relative or State or Territory government
- enables you to work and study in Australia
- provides you with access to Australian public health care
- permits you to sponsor your spouse/partner and children for permanent residence
Skilled Nominated – Subclass 190
- Permanent Resident visa
- requires at least 60 overall skilled points
- needs a State or Territory government nomination
- requires you to live and work in the nominating State or Territory for at least 2 years
Note: all other visa characteristics and requirements mirror that of the Skilled Independent – Subclass 189.
Skilled Work Regional – Subclass 491
- Provisional visa
- allows you to live and work in Australia for 5 years
- requires at least 55 overall skilled points
- needs a State or Territory government nomination or an eligible Australian relative sponsor usually resident in a designated area
- you must live for 3 years and work full-time for 12 months in a regional or low population growth area to be eligible to apply for the permanent residence
Note: all other visa characteristics and requirements mirror that of the Skilled Independent – Subclass 189.
Graduate Temporary – Subclass 485
- Temporary visa
- allows you to live and work in Australia for 18 months from the date the visa is granted
- you are eligible for this visa if you are an international student who has completed a 2 year course of study in Australia awarding you a qualification
- you must apply for this visa within 6 months of applying for this visa
- you can include a spouse/partner and dependent children
- you must maintain your private health insurance while holding this visa
Recognised Graduate – Subclass 476
- Temporary visa
- allows you to live and work in Australia for 18 months from the date the visa is granted
- you are eligible for this visa if you are recent engineering graduate at a Bachelor level or higher
- the education institution you graduated from must be accredited through the Washington Accord or at an institution approved by the Department of Home Affairs
- you must be under 31 years old at the time you lodge this application
